Quito, 1944. Aparte de su obra narrativa, ha trabajado también temas relacionados con la literatura oral. En este campo pueden mencionarse El cuento popular, Quito 1997; La poesía popular, Quito, 1982, entre otros. Su libro de relatos Bajo el mismo extraño cielo, cuentos) Bogotá, Círculo de lectores, 1979, mereció el Premio Nacional de literatura de ese año. Su novela Sueño de Lobos, Quito, 1986, también ganó ese premio y fue declarada El mejor libro del año. Dirigió la revista cultural Palabra Suelta, y la Editorial Grijalbo publicó, en 1989, su obra Divertinventos o libro de fantasías y utopías (cuentos). En 1996, El Conejo editó El palacio de los espejos, ahora en Alfaguara (cuentos). Está por publicarse su obra crítica acerca de las corrientes narrativas El cristal con que se mira.

Siempre vinculado al trabajo intelectual, ha participado en múltiples simposios y seminarios en muchas partes del mundo y ha realizado investigaciones de campo como recopilador de leyendas y tradiciones orales. Ha escrito y adaptado obras de teatro. Relatos suyos han sido traducidos al inglés, francés, alemán, ruso e italiano. Su novela Ciudad de invierno ya ha alcanzado veinte y dos ediciones.

En 1997 presentó en USA Wolves´Dream, traducción de su novela Sueño de lobos, por la editorial Latin Amerian Literary Review Press, de Pittsburgh. En el 2000 publicó, en Abya Yala, su libro de ensayos “Referentes”, presentado en Gijón –Asturias, por Luis Sepúlveda. En el 2002, El Conejo editó su obra de teatro Adiós Siglo XX. En el 2002, la editorial Txalaparta de España editó Sueño de lobos y la seleccionó para sus “clubes de lectores”.

Su novela LA MADRIGUERA, publicada en junio de 2004, fue distinguida con el Premio Joaquín Gallegos Lara a la mejor novela de ese año y la Editorial Norma publicó a, comienzos del 2005, la tercera edición de dicha novela que, además, quedó entre las seleccionadas al Premio Rómulo Gallegos.

En el 2006, publica con La Campaña de Lectura, Lectores, credo y confesiones, y en el 2007, Celebración de los libros con Eskeletra.

En el 2008, es publicada, por el Iila, en italiano, Cittâ de inverno, traducción de su novela Ciudad de invierno. En este año publica el tercer tomo de Divertinventos, llamado La escala humana. En el 2009, aparecerá la traducción al griego de Ciudad de inverno.

Dirige talleres literarios y ha dictado clases y conferencias en colegios y universidades. Ha escrito en varias revistas del país y del exterior. Es fácil encontrarlo en el Internet con el Google.
